This morning Spurs fans woke up to yet another twist in the on-going Gareth Bale transfer saga. Tottenham Hotspur have removed both Gareth Bale and Clint Dempsey from the background of their official Twitter page. The pair have since been replaced on the website by Spurs duo Moussa Dembélé and Aaron Lennon.

Dempsey left the Lilywhites last week with a move across the Atlantic to MLS side Seattle Sounders. However, Gareth Bale remains at the club and was reported to have returned to Spurs training yesterday after missing the side’s pre season tour to Hong Kong due to injury.

The Welshman’s removal from the Spurs Twitter account has prompted increased speculation that the winger is on his way out of the club to Spanish giants Real Madrid. Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy, is reported to be holding out for a cash offer in excess of £85 million, plus striker Álvaro Morata. However, a deal including Ángel Di María or Fabio Coentrão seems more likely considering Real Madrid’s reluctance to let go of their promising striker.

Spurs fans will be hoping for a deal to be sorted out as soon as possible as they will not want the speculation surrounding Bale to infect the beginning of the season. Last year, a similar situation saw Luka Modrić start the season in a Spurs shirt before moving to Real Madrid for a fee of £33 million in late August. The protracted Modrić transfer saga unsettled the North London club and arguably contributed to their slow start to the campaign.
