Liverpool look to offload flop Downing
Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has been told he can leave Anfield and is now evaluating his options according to reports.
The Daily Mail state that Brendan Rogers is looking to reduce an already inflated wage bill at the club as a result of numerous signings made during Kenny Dalglish’s time in charge. The 29 year old was bought for around £20million from Aston Villa in 2011, but has struggled to hold down a regular first team place.
The England International was publicly criticized after failing to provide even one goal or assist during the 2011/2012 season and as a result found himself on the bench for much of last season. However, a slight return to form towards the back end of the 2012/2013 season has reportedly added Downing’s name to many manager’s transfer shortlists.
BBC sport claim that Newcastle are interested in the player for £5million, however he will have to take a large pay cut if he were to move to Tyneside.
