The BYU Cougars notched another win today by scoring 14 tries enroute to an 84-14 victory over UCLA today.
The Cougars started the scoring by junior flanker Jeff Ott barreling over from 5 meters out after a series of well-worked phases from the Cougars. Freshman flyhalf Jonny Linehan would convert the try and the Cougars led 7-0 in the 6th minute.
BYU would go on to notch 7 more in the first half of the game with UCLA dotting down 21st minute.
With a tally of replacements in the second BYU scored another 6 tries to UCLA’s lone try in the 55th minute.
The match’s highlighted try came in the final moments of the 1st half.
Following a UCLA turn over inside the BYU 22 meter line a deft set of hands from freshman scrum half Luke Mocke put the ball to sophomore prop Kody Thompson.
Thompson would run 20 meters before passing to a supporting senior prop Ray Forrester who then raced 60-plus meters down the sideline, while fending a late would-be UCLA defender near the goal line.
The match saw the entire BYU traveling squad see the field with young and new players all seeing valuable minutes during the early part of the 2013 season.
“We improved,” said BYU head coach David Smyth, “We wanted to see some better continuity and ball security today after Thursday night’s game and I think we did that. We still have some ways to go, but the boys are working hard to improve and it showed today.”
BYU is slated to take on in-state foe Snow College in Ephraim, UT this Saturday. Given recent weather conditions its unclear if the match will be moved or cancelled. Stay tuned to Facebook and Twitter for match information.
