Nine FC Barcelona wins over Aguirre

The Mexican manager has only beaten Barça twice in fifteen attempts, once when he was at Osasuna and once at Atlético Madrid

Barça’s biggest win was the famous 6-0 at the Calderón; Aguirre best result was 4-2 at the same stadium

But the Mexican is unbeaten in the league since taking over at Espanyol, with three draws and a win

King’s Day will bring Espanyol to the Camp Nou for the first game of 2013 and the first derby of the season. The visitors have a new manager in Javier Aguirre, but the Mexican has faced Barça 15 times in the past and only won twice.

Three draws to start

All of the first three games between Aguirre and FCB ended even. In 2002/03, Osasuna and Barça first drew at the Camp Nou and then it ended 2-2 at the Reyno de Navarra. The three draws were completed the following season, back at the Camp Nou, where the side from Pamplona managed another draw, 1-1.

Four wins

From there on his luck against Barça ran out. The Catalans won four in a row under Frank Rijkaard and it was not until 2005/06 that a 2-1 win at the Reyno de Navarra gave Aguirre his first set of three points against Barça, in his last game against the Blaugrana as Osasuna manager.

Five losses, one win and won draw

Javier Aguirre then faced FC Barcelona six more times as manager of Atlético Madrid and Zaragoza.

With the red-and-whites, he managed a draw at the Camp Nou on December 21, 2006. But FCB soon got their revenge with an emphatic 6-0 win in Madrid, Barça’s biggest ever against an Aguirre coached side.

The only time ‘El Vasco’ beat Barça in his time in charge of the mattress-makers was in 2007/08, by 4-2. The other two meetings ended in 3-0 and 6-1 Barça wins.

At Zaragoza, the Aragonese outfit lost both meetings, 1-0 and 4-0 at the Camp Nou, the last two times that FC Barcelona played games against teams coached by Javier Aguirre. The ‘series’ resumes this Saturday with the Mexican now in charge at Espanyol, whose results have improved considerably since his arrival, with three draws, including one at the Bernabéu, and a 2-0 win against Deportivo. With only 15 points, Espanyol are still in the relegation zone, but in a far less precarious situation than they were a month or so ago.
