Alan Pardew hopes Newcastle owner Mike Ashley will back his plans to bring in a striking replacement for Demba Ba.

Ba is on his way out of St James' Park, with the formalities of a switch to Chelsea in the process of being tied up.

His departure will see Newcastle shorn of the services of their leading marksman, leaving them with a gaping hole to fill in their frontline.

Pardew is aware of the need to bring in quality reinforcements, but believes he will need support from Ashley as the money generated from Ba's sale is unlikely to stretch very far in the January transfer market.

He has also hinted that he already has a target in mind, with reports suggesting that Marseille's France international Loic Remy could be the man the Magpies turn to.

Pardew said: "Mike has been supportive, and he has to be even more supportive now.

"He has to find the extra money for a striker, as we're not going to get one in for the Ba money.

"There's always a player who can enhance a team and we wouldn't be competent if we didn't look to replace him, which we have. Hopefully we can get that one in.

"Demba really didn't give too much away and that's his right. We didn't know if he was going at the start or at the end, or if he was going at all."
