Reid's camp was planning to notify the Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers Thursday afternoon he will not be meeting with them because he was closing in on a deal with the Chiefs, according to a person informed of the progress of negotiations between the former Philadelphia Eagles coach and the team. INTERVIEWS SET: Kelly to talk to three NFL teams GALLERY: The top NFL candidates The person, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because talks were ongoing, said Reid was loosely planning to interview with Arizona on Friday and San Diego on Saturday but that the meeting with the Chiefs Wednesday night went so well it's become clear that's where Reid is likely to land. The person said there is no deal as of now, but it's likely to be finalized shortly. It's unclear what Reid's potential hiring will mean to Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who sat in on the meetings. There have been reports Reid will bring former Eagles general manager Tom Heckert with him, though that's not a certainty at this point. Meanwhile, the Cardinals have requested and received permission to interview Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley, per a person with knowledge of the details of that meeting. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the interview wasn't to be addressed publicly. Haley, the Cardinals' offensive coordinator during their Super Bowl season of 2008, is coming off a rocky season in Pittsburgh following an even rockier two-plus years as the Chiefs' head coach. Haley, who went 19-27 in Kansas City (including a postseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens), had his schemes publicly questioned by Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Former Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt met with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday, according to a person informed of that meeting who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team is keeping its meetings private. Whisenhunt already interviewed with the Buffalo Bills and is expected to talk to the Bills again. Reid's former team confirmed a scheduled interview with Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy on Sunday. The Eagles will meet with McCoy in Denver. McCoy is also slated to speak to the Chicago Bears on Sunday after meetings with the Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals on Saturday. Story Highlights
