What did RGIII whisper into Tony Romo's ear after Sunday's game?

Following's Sunday victory in the de facto NFC East championship game, Robert Griffin III and Tony Romo met near midfield for a postgame handshake.

NBC cameras showed a live shot of the meeting, which lasted longer than the shake-and-go exchanges usually seen after big games. It was clear RGIII was saying something to Romo. Most figured the 22-year-old rookie was giving words of encouragement to the 32-year-old veteran.

Audio captured by Inside the NFL confirms that, but shows that Griffin didn't stop there.

So what did RGIII say to Romo?

He lied. He lied directly to his face.

"You're a great quarterback, man and this game doesn't mean anything," Griffin said, as heard by Inside the NFL cameras (via John Ourand).

Ouch. RGIII's words undeniably came from the right place but, man, that must have been painful for Romo to hear. It's like your kid brother telling you on his wedding day that you'll find love one day, old man.

As for the first part of that sentence; we don't believe in kicking a man when he's down. Even the biggest Romo supporter would have a hard time throwing around the "G" word after Sunday night. The second part? Both RGIII and Romo know that's not true.

Winning wasn't going to erase the past for Romo-- not without a corresponding win against Seattle in the playoffs -- but it was a step in the right direction. Narratives can change quickly in sports: witness the arcs of the careers of LeBron James and Phil Mickelson after they finally won titles. A comeback win against RGIII, another win against Seattle and a divisional playoff upset in Atlanta and all of a sudden, Romo's a star again. Dallas loses, so now Jerry Jones has to give his QB dreaded vote of confidence. It changes that quickly.

And fair or not, unless Romo does something to change the narrative (ie, winning an NFC title or a Super Bowl) in the next few seasons, Sunday night will be one of his defining performances.

Griffin began his statement with a piece of advice.

"Hey Tony. I just wanted to say to you, don't listen to what anybody else is saying about you," he said.

That one, Romo might want to listen to.
