Top 3 Potential Manchester United Summer Signings
Hallelujah! The January Transfer Window has finally come to an end. Understandably some Manchester United fans may be disappointed that the only player there club signed will arrive in the summer. However, there will be plenty more United fans can look forward to come July.
Sir Alex always buys in the summer in the best interest of the player. Letting him settle in to the side throughout pre-season and growing accustom to his new surroundings. Wilfried Zaha will join in the summer, and he wont be the only one.
So below, I've listed for you three possible summer transfer window targets for Manchester United.
Manchester United's defence has been highlighted for its vulnerability this season, so we'll start there.
Mats Hummels – Borussia Dortmund
Don't get me wrong, Manchester United have enough talented players to play centre half for the next ten years, but Matts Hummels is different.
The German centre half has been linked with Manchester United since the start of the season. His excellent performances for Borussia Dortmund and Germany have seen his stock rise emphatically, which has seen many people claim him to be the best, young centre back around.
The 24 year old would be a welcome addition to the squad, and would join a young, experienced back line full of quality at Old Trafford. However, the German will cost Manchester United a considerable fee, with Borussia Dortmund reluctant to do business with the Manchester club after signing their former player Shinji Kagawa, as well as being linked with striker Robert Lewandowski for large parts of the season.
Hummels has been quoted in the past saying: “One day I will say that I am keen on a transfer.
“To play football in a new country would be flattering. I already had offers and one enquiry from these offers was really one of interest for me.”
With Rio Ferdinand yet to sign a new deal at Old Trafford, Hummels may be bought in to add some experience to the Manchester United backline. Although Smalling and Evans currently look the future, theres no doubt that Hummels would be a fantastic signing.
Kevin Strootman – PSV Eindhoven
The Dutch midfielder has been linked with Manchester United and likened to former Old Trafford legend Roy Keane for some time now. With 15 Holland international caps to his name, the PSV midfielder is already making waves on a global scale and has established himself as one of Europe’s most versatile central talents, something that has caught the eye of Sir Alex.
Similiarly to the defence, the Manchester United midfield has been lamented recently for its lack of bite and tenacity. Kevin Strootman would be an ideal, tough tackling midfielder for Sir Alex to snap up this summer, for a reasonable price too.
Sky Sports recently reported that the midfielder could leave his Dutch club for as little as £15million for Manchester United.
The midfield enforcer looked likely to join United this past window, however a deal never materialized. Fergie seems to be a big fan of Strootman, who could make way to Old Trafford this summer.
Robert Lewandowski – Borussia Dortmund
This is a tricky one. The Manchester United attack is currently one of the most lethal strike forces in world football. The quartet of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck would suggest that there is no room for Lewandowski at Old Trafford, but that hasnt stopped the transfer rumours flying around.
Something so appealing about this transfer is the price tag. Lewandowski is available for just £18million. That is an incredibly low price for such a world-class star, who has lead the line so successfully for Borussia Dortmund as the club won back to back domestic titles.
The potential partnership of Robert Lewandowski and Robin van Persie upfront, with Wayne Rooney just behind, and Shinji Kagawa floating just inside is a frightening thought, something that Sir Alex no doubt has thought about already.
The signing of Robert Lewandowski will no doubt see Wayne Rooney complete his switch to a deeper midfield role this season, which we've seen has been a deadly transistion so far.
As impressive as the current squad is, reinforcements and improvements are a necessity. The current squad is good, but not great. Sir Alex Ferguson knows this more than anyone.
