Jonny Wilkinson has opened the door to a Lions call-up
Jonny Wilkinson has confirmed he is prepared to discuss the possibility of joining up with the British & Irish Lions in Australia.
The 34-year-old fly-half ended a Heineken Cup-winning campaign at Toulon in disappointment with a 19-14 Top 14 final defeat to Castres on Saturday - and Wilkinson is now awaiting an injection on a slight groin problem.
That did not stop the hero of the 2003 World Cup from inviting contact from Lions coach Warren Gatland - and he may yet perform a sensational U-turn having originally rejected a place on the tour.
Wilkinson said: "If Warren wants to call me about joining up with the Lions, I will happily have that conversation with him.
"The Lions did well today and I'm going to need a couple of days just to assess where I am.
"It always feels worse when you've just lost a big game. And I don't even know if Warren still wants me, but I'm certainly not going to rule anything out."
Saracens and England stand-off Owen Farrell drew criticism for his performance in the tour opener in Hong Kong despite a 59-8 victory over the Barbarians, during which he was involved in a incident with Schalk Brits that has resulted in his club-mate being banned for three weeks.
