Dominic Bird requires medical attention against NSW
Dominic Bird has been ruled out of the remainder of the Super Rugby season having learnt he requires surgery on a shoulder problem.
The uncapped Canterbury lock had also been tipped to be included in the New Zealand squad for the forthcoming Test series against France.
Bird was forced off the field during Friday's match with the New South Wales Waratahs and the Crusaders reported that the injury requires surgery.
A club statement read: "Following further medical assessment on Saturday, the Crusaders can confirm that Bird has ruptured his left pectoralis major tendon and will require surgery later this week.
The 22-year-old was expected to be called into the All Blacks' squad as the third lock behind Luke Romano and Brodie Retallick, following the recent retirement of Ali Williams and an injury to Sam Whitelock.
Meanwhile, Crusaders' forward Kieran Read suffered a knock to the head during the same match and will require further medical assessment before knowing if he is available to face France in Auckland next Saturday.
