England v New Zealand: Burns awaits chance after Flood ruled out

England fly-half Toby Flood will not be fit to face New Zealand on Saturday, opening the way for Freddie Burns to feature in the match-day squad.

Flood injured his toe against South Africa and despite a scan showing no broken bone, will not recover in time.

Either Owen Farrell, who replaced Flood against the Springboks, or the uncapped Burns (above), who was called into the squad on Sunday, is set to start at 10.

England have also called up Gloucester prop Nick Wood and Bath wing Tom Biggs.

Wood is covering for Alex Corbisiero (knee), while Biggs replaces Ugo Monye (calf).

England will be looking to get back to winning ways against the All Blacks after a disappointing 20-14 defeat to Australia was followed up by a 16-15 loss to South Africa.

Burns has been in superb form for Gloucester this season, earning plaudits for his attacking style and improved game management.

"Freddie has been in for two of the last three weeks so we know what he can bring and Nick Wood will provide cover as we manage Alex's knee at the start of the week," said Lancaster.

"Tom [Biggs] is next in line from the Saxons and we are looking forward to getting a look at him."
