US 7s Team Addresses Issues in Training

Ball security is on the minds of the USA men’s 7s team in Dubai, and the job is more complicated than simply saying “don’t drop the ball,” explains Coach Alex Magleby.

Falconry is one of the most popular sports in Dubai, and in fact has been for centuries. Here the USA players and coaches get a quick tutorial on handling a falcon.

“If you have someone dropping the ball, it could be something as straightforward as he is not concentrating,” said Magleby. “But there are other factors involved, too. He could be too deep, or maybe too flat for the pass. Maybe he’s not communicating with his teammate, or maybe he is, and the teammate is not listening. All of these things are what we’ve been looking at in camp.”

In addition to dealing with several reasons for mistakes, Magleby has been looking at trying to make rugby tougher in training.

Domestically, these players all generally find success relatively easily. In camp, this happens, too.

“You might have a session where the players are scrimmaging, and Shalom keeps breaking through midfield and scoring a try, but on the circuit, he’s not going to score that try – the cover defenses are too good,” said Magleby. “So you have to adjust what you’re doing to replicate that. We might change the number of players, or the shape or size of the field. We have to find different ways to replicate the level of pressure the players face on the circuit.”
