Marcos Lopes says he was left speechless after scoring on his Manchester City debut in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

The Portugal midfielder, who turned 17 last week, scored an injury-time goal in City's 3-0 win over Watford at the Etihad.

Manager Roberto Mancini had been planning on giving Lopes his debut for some time, and the youngster, a late substitute in the final minutes, was left speechless by his own performance.

Speaking to the club's official website, Lopes said: "It was my first game for the first team and my first goal. I have no words to express my feelings.

"I trained on Friday and the coach told me I was in the squad to play but to come on after 86 minutes and score a goal... I have no words to explain it."

Mario Balotelli, who hit headlines last week after his training ground bust-up with Mancini, gave Lopes the assist for the late goal, and with a hugely influential 20 minutes looks to have struck a more positive note in his City career.

Mancini's thoughts will now turn once more to trying to close the gap between league leaders Manchester United, and Spain's David Silva said the target is to reduce their seven point disadvantage by the end of February.

"It won't be easy but our challenge is to be back level with Manchester United by the end of February," Silva said.

"Last year we saw how they were in front by quite a lot of points and we won the league anyway, so it can be done."
