Tom Varndell: Ruptured his bicep during training
Wasps wing Tom Varndell has been ruled out for up to four months after rupturing his bicep during training on Wednesday.
The Aviva Premiership club said that the prolific try-scorer faces "three to four months" of recovering following an operation this week.
The 27-year-old has scored 73 Premiership tries, lying third on the all-time list behind Sale Sharks pair Mark Cueto and Steve Hanley.
Meanwhile, back-row forward Rory Pitman is facing a similar lay-off to Varndell after damaging ankle ligaments during Wasps' A League game against Bath on Monday night.
The Welsh native also requires surgery and is likely to be out for up to four months.
Wasps say Hugo Southwell, Elliot Daly, James Bailey, James Haskell and Phil Swainston are all unlikely to play in September, but are making good progress from their respective injuries.
The one bright spot on the injury front for Dai Young's side is regarding captain Chris Bell, who is in contention for this weekend's trip to Exeter Chiefs after recovering from a minor infection.
