The USA 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship is apparently looking into bringing back a women’s competition.
After not finding enough interest in a tournament last year, the organizers are looking into adding women to an expanded event that will now feature 20 men’s teams, as well as expanded high school competitions for both boys and girls.
Several college programs have expressed an interest in competing in what is expected to be an eight-team women’s CRC 7s. West Chester University has offered to host the preliminary matches, with the final (and maybe more games) played at PPL Park.
Organizers are looking for women’s rugby teams that are interested, and who are willing to enter into a conversation to discuss requirements to compete.
While it’s too early to speculate who might be a good fit for the CRC, certainly West Chester, if they host, would be one team, and Penn State would be another. Army won the women’s tournament in 2011 and, along with Navy, would seem ideal for the CRC. Fans might also see Texas, UCLA, Princeton, and Norwich University in the mix.
Pairing up men’s and women’s teams in the CRC might work well for the event and the teams involved – reports indicate some colleges might be even more supportive of the CRC effort if two teams were going. So Texas, UCLA, and Cal, who all have solid programs for both men and women, would be candidates to double up.
