Brendan Rodgers was optimistic over the Liverpool future of Luiz Suarez after watching the Uruguay forward return to action in a 2-0 friendly victory over Melbourne Victory.

Suarez has been the subject of two bids from Arsenal, the latest a £40million-plus-£1 offer triggering a clause in the player's contract where the club were duty bound to inform him of the offer.

Suarez, 26, came on as a 78th minute substitute at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of a sell-out 95,000 crowd in a game which saw goals from Reds captain Steven Gerrard and Iago Aspas secure a 2-0 win.

The Uruguyan created the second for Liverpool's summer recruit from Celta Vigo but Rodgers was tight-lipped over the immediate future of a player who has been also been linked to Real Madrid this summer.

Rodgers said: "I've had a few conversations with Luis, there's nothing really new to report. He's been surrounded by speculation but he's here working with the group, a little bit tired at the moment because he obviously only flew in.

"He was a little bit tired and he came on and played that 20 minutes or so but there's nothing new to report.

"He's very much a Liverpool player. Over the course of the next few weeks we have to get him up to speed and have him fit and ready to go for the beginning of the season."
