Will this be another Spanish dead-end for Moyes and Manchester United?

As I was typing this yesterday, David Moyes confirmed that Manchester United had indeed made a second bid for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, after an initial £25 million bid was rejected by the Catalan club.

The Red Devils had upped their bid to £30million, which included add-ons. There were also reports surfacing that United were ready to double the players’ wages if he does agrees to switch back to England. There is a possibility that Barcelona may not entertain any further bids but that hasn’t deterred either Moyes or United. Reports are rife that Manchester United may have made a third bid of £35 million with add-ons. If these reports are true, then Cesc Fabregasmay become Manchester United’s record signing ever, if he decides to swap the jersey of Barcelona with the Red half of Manchester.

This is no hidden secret that David Moyes needs a quality and a creative central threat in midfield, more than ever after the retirement of Paul Scholes. We know it and David knows this far better than any of us, but why do I feel that the managers’ pursuit of another Spanish midfielder may end up being another fruitless transfer campaign?

Before any one of Manchester United fanatics try to jump on my back, inspite of the club making another offer (which shows that the deal is progressing) and I might have to eat a humble pie if indeed Cesc were to sign for us, Consider this - Are we really naïve to think that a player who left Arsenal for his ‘beloved’ home club, will leave his ‘home’ (Ok...that home part is debatable) and come back to England?. The lure of first team football is always attracting to any footballer in the world (ask ‘Wazza’), but a bigger question arises if at all Barcelona would be willing to let go of another ‘La Masia’ product after the departure of Thiago Alcantara?

First Thiago, now Fabregas…It is unlikely to think that David Moyes would not have any Plan-B in case Cesc Fabregas decided to stay put at Camp Nou. Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye and ex-Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric are rumored to be interesting Moyes in case the transfer of Spanish international does not goes through. Manchester United fans all around the world are eagerly waiting for a ‘marquee signing’ and undoubtedly Fabregas’ transfer would certainly raise the morale of the squad and the fans, just like the signing of Robin Van Persie last year.

At a time when fans all around the world are still coming to terms with the retirement of longest serving manager Sir Alex Ferguson, doubts have also placed on the future of Wayne Rooney. Moyes needs to shore up our midfield, and after losing out on Thiago Alcantara, the signing of Cesc Fabregas would come as a huge boost to the club and to Moyes in particular. The club has been clever in making a revised bid as Ed Woodward and Moyes want to take advantage of uncertainty around Camp Nou after manager Tito Vilanova stepped down recently. But this one doesn’t seem like a cakewalk, does it?

659 Million Manchester United supporters worldwide would surely hope that Fabregas plays in colors of red this season. After all, this news comes at a vital time for United’s supporters. Fans

have been forced to sit back and watch as many of the club’s rivals improve their squads with high-profile signings. Fabregas’ capture would represent a fantastic piece of business for United, but remember it takes more than just a convincing to convince someone!
