Tommy Bowe: Could miss the first 12 weeks of the season
Ulster and Ireland wing Tommy Bowe could miss the first three months of the season with a wrist injury.
The 29-year-old was due to have exploratory surgery on Wednesday to discover whether he has damaged ligaments in the same hand he injured while playing for the British and Irish Lions in Australia.
Bowe missed the first Test win over the Wallabies after breaking a bone in his hand against Queensland Reds, but he recovered in time to play in the final two Tests as the Lions clinched a first series victory since 1997.
The Monaghan native was expected to miss Ulster's opening games of the RaboDirect PRO12 season, with the trip to former side Ospreys on 4 October scheduled as his return date.
However, if surgery reveals serious ligament damage, Bowe could miss Ulster's Heineken Cup fixtures against Leicester Tigers and Montpellier and also Ireland's November internationals.
