Today's Big Winner: Harvard
"How's your bracket?"
It is the question of the day, the weekend and the rest of the month. It is the universal greeting -- and the most legitimate form of social currency. You don't have to be a die-hard college hoops fan -- you simply have to have filled out a bracket and have a reply to the question.
Did you go 16-0? 11-5? 8-8? Did you overlook the Pac-12-seeds? Did you not know enough about Colorado State? Did you fall for Saint Mary's? Did you remember not to doubt Butler? Did you survive and advance with Marquette?
Did you pick Harvard? There is a phenomenon unique to the NCAA tournament, especially on Day 1: In your head, you want to see the upsets; in your heart, you want your bracket to be right. And so if you're like me, you're watching the Marquette-Davidson game, torn between witnessing the magic of a 14-over-3, which has only happened 16 times in tournament history, and desperately wanting to maintain the health of your bracket (which in my case has Marquette going to the Elite Eight, a choice that around 5 pm turned into a wait-what-was-I-thinking panic). I don't feel guilty rooting for Goliath to beat down David. I don't feel guilty cheering all the way during Marquette's stunning comeback. I want my bracket to be right. On the other hand, there's Harvard. Another 14-over-3 opportunity. There is that tension again: I would love to see Harvard pull the upset; I picked New Mexico. However! I have New Mexico losing in the Round of 32 anyway, and so "Upset Rooting Interest" is activated! Go Crimson! I feel genuinely bad for Davidson. And yet I feel genuinely great for me that I picked the team that ruined their season. And yet again, I feel amazing for Harvard and couldn't care less about New Mexico, entirely because I had so quickly dismissed the Lobos in my bracket anyway. The thrill of the upsets versus being the thrill of being right: That is the central tension at the heart of what makes the NCAA tournament so compelling. How's my bracket? A heck of a lot better than it would have been had Marquette lost. And a heck of a lot more awesome because Harvard won. Bring on the second half of the Round of 64 today, the Round of 32 over the weekend and the next big question, for Monday: "How many Sweet 16 teams do you have?" ***** Another big winner: Jeremy Lin. So, yes: The NCAA kind of mis-seeded the Pac-12. *Laurent Rivard: Hits 5 3s for the Crimson, keying their upset of New Mexico. *Southern: If you're a 16-seed, you're not going to win. But if you keep it close -- as the Jaguars did -- you become instantly memorable in a way that other losers aren't. *Syracuse: Yikes. *Miami Heat: Tonight vs. Detroit for No. 25, Sunday vs. Charlotte for No. 26 **** Today's Must-Read from USA TODAY Sports: On the upset scene in SLC (Lindsay H.
