(Photo: Carlos Osorio, AP) The Tigers and starting pitcher Justin Verlander reached an agreement on a seven-year, $180 million contract extension with a $22 million vesting option for an eighth year, according to ESPN's Buster Olney on Twitter. Verlander, 30, was drafted by the Tigers in the first round in the 2004 draft, reached the majors in 2005, and signed a five-year extension with the club before the 2010 season. Before the latest extension, he was set to become a free agent after 2014. The new deal is the biggest ever given to a pitcher, narrowly beating out the seven-year, $175 million extension Felix Hernandez signed with the Mariners earlier this offseason. Tags
